The adaptive selector counted three consecutive wins by re-reading the cached probe map on every completed cycle, including the ten-second active-only ticks. One idle sample of an alternate connection could reach the switch threshold in about 20 seconds. After a reconnect, the map also kept the previous socket's RTT, so a recovered connection was compared using a measurement from a socket that no longer existed. A streak hit now needs a candidate sampled in this cycle and a heartbeat RTT from the socket that is connected now. Startup selection and failover still use the probe map, because they need the last known state.
